Our faculty include renowned physician-educators, physician-scientists and researchers with knowledge and practical experience in virtually every subspecialty of gastroenterology – from endoscopy to hepatology to neurogastroenterology and motility.

They are led by Satish Rao, MD, PhD, past-president of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society. Dr. Rao is also the recipient of the three highest honors awarded by the American Gastroenterological Association, the world’s premier gastroenterology society. These include the Distinguished Clinician, Distinguished Educator and Master Researcher awards.
Dr. John Affronti, M.D. is a nationally renowned expert on advanced endoscopy and biliary problems. He has tremendous knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex, medically refractory pancreatic and biliary disorders and in ERCP and EUS.
Sherman M. Chamberlain, MD, brings a unique blend of clinical experience and skill, having worked in private practice and academia. His expertise includes diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy/colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, GI bleeding and novel ideas for improving colonoscopy performance.
Joseph Griffin, M.D., former section chief, has a major interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is an active part-time clinician at VAMC. He is a superb educator.
Thomas Kiernan, M.D. is an outstanding clinician and hepatologist. He directs the hepatology clinics at GRU and VAMC and supervises fellows teaching and learning in hepatology.
Vernon C. Spaulding, MD, a retired U.S. Army General and astute clinician, has a keen eye, a precision for accurate diagnosis and management of GI problems, and a strong commitment to our veteran population.
Charles L. Spurr, MD, brings a vast repository of knowledge and experience on the efficient management of common gastroenterological and hepatological problems in the community and on how to establish a GI practice. He serves fulltime at the local VA Hospital.
You’ll also benefit from the knowledge, expertise and wisdom of Subbaramiah Sridhar, MD, MRCP. This internationally respected physician-educator serves as an examiner at the Royal College of Physicians in UK. Dr. Sridhar excels in advanced endoscopy, ERCP and EUS.
