Satish SC Rao, MD, PhD, FRCP, FACG, AGAF

They are led by Satish Rao, MD, PhD, past-president of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society. Dr. Rao is also the recipient of the three highest honors awarded by the American Gastroenterological Association, the world’s premier gastroenterology society. These include the Distinguished Clinician, Distinguished Educator and Master Researcher awards.
John P. Affronti, MD, MS
Dr. John Affronti, M.D. is a nationally renowned expert on advanced endoscopy and biliary problems. He has tremendous knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex, medically refractory pancreatic and biliary disorders and in ERCP and EUS.
Sherman M. Chamberlain, MD, FACP, AGAF, FACG
Sherman M. Chamberlain, MD, brings a unique blend of clinical experience and skill, having worked in private practice and academia. His expertise includes diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy/colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, GI bleeding and novel ideas for improving colonoscopy performance.
Sumanth Reddy Daram, MD, FACP
Sumanth Daram, MD is a gastroenterologist specializing in interventional endoscopy. He moved to Augusta with the goal of building a high quality interventional endoscopy practice. His professional interests comprise diagnostic and therapeutic EUS, ERCP, biliary and pancreatic diseases. He has received advanced training in interventional endoscopy procedures at the Northwestern University in Chicago. Additionally, he focuses on the use of videos in patient care and medical education.
Joseph Griffin, M.D., former section chief, has a major interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is an active part-time clinician at VAMC. He is a superb educator.
Sandeep Khurana, MD
Sandeep Khurana is a Gastroenterologist specializing in Hepatology. He joined GRU with a mandate to build and develop a state-of-the-art liver disease care program. Dr. Khurana is Board Certified in Transplant Hepatology and an expert in managing patients of all stages of liver diseases i.e. hepatitis, cirrhosis and post-liver transplant.
Thomas Kiernan, M.D. is an outstanding clinician and hepatologist. He directs the hepatology clinics at GRU and VAMC and supervises fellows teaching and learning in hepatology.
Vernon C. Spaulding, MD
Vernon C. Spaulding, MD, a retired U.S. Army General and astute clinician, has a keen eye, a precision for accurate diagnosis and management of GI problems, and a strong commitment to our veteran population. Dr. Spaulding recently retired from the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in March 2014.
Charles L. Spurr, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Charles L. Spurr, MD, brings a vast repository of knowledge and experience on the efficient management of common gastroenterological and hepatological problems in the community and on how to establish a GI practice. He serves fulltime at the local VA Hospital.
