As we approach Thanksgiving GRU music students are presenting their fall concerts. Music
lovers will appreciate the wide array of repertoire including And the Glory of the Lord and For Unto Us a Child in Born from Handel's Messiah. The GRU Orchestra concert on Thursday, November 21st features a combined Orchestra and Choir for the Messiah pieces and highlights four soprano soloists. The concert will also feature pieces
by Mozart and Vaughn Williams.
At the November GRU Jazz Ensemble concert the Department of Music announced that Wycliffe Gordon, renowned jazz trombonist, will be a visiting professor beginning in the fall of 2014. He will spend six weeks of each semester at GRU working with students in a new Jazz Studies Track in the Bachelor of Music degree program. To read more about this exciting new opportunity click here.
The GRU Lyceum Series continues in the spring. Tickets are available now for two world class performances. On Saturday, February 15, we welcome Urban Bush Women to the Maxwell Theatre stage. The company has made an indelible mark on the field with bold, innovative, demanding and exciting works that challenge long-held assumptions about women, people of color, body types, styles of movement, society, and history. We close the 2013-2014 Lyceum Series on Thursday, March 27 with a concert and lecture by South African superstar Johnny Clegg. He is one of South Africa's most celebrated sons. He is a singer, a songwriter, a dancer, anthropologist and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has sold more than five million albums worldwide.
Most of the events that take place in the Maxwell Theatre are free to current GRU students. GRU faculty and staff tickets are often discounted or available for free. Tickets for community members are available at reasonable prices. Please do not hesitate to call the box office with questions. The box office may be reached at 706-667-4100.
