Maxwell Theatre News

July 27, 2014

The 2014 – 2015 GRU Lyceum Series opens with a laugh. A big laugh. The Second City is the first name in comedy. It's stages and touring companies play to over one million people per year. It has the largest improv and sketch comedy training program in the country. When NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) began, it featured three Second City alumni and alums have continued to play a major role on the show. Famous Second City actors have included Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Tim Meadows, Rachel Dratch, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, John & Jim Belushi, and so many more.  Come to this performance and see tomorrow's superstars, today.

In January the Lyceum Series is back with the Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble. Visionary hoop dancing, powerful drums, dazzling fancy dancing, elegant traditional dancing, soaring powwow vocals, ancient flute songs, cultural insight, and Northern Plains sign language; the performance is a feast for the senses and a banquet of rich authentic stories of the First Nations.

In March the Lyceum Series brings Christopher O’Riley, host of NPR’s From the Top, to the Maxwell Theatre stage. Although he is known to millions as a radio host, he is also a world renowned concert pianist, appearing with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, and more. His Georgia Regents University concert will feature his reimagining of popular works from his CD Out of my Hands. O’Riley garnered critical accolades and international acclaim, including the only four-star review ever given by Rolling Stone to a classical pianist with his earlier release of True Love Waits. He will perform pieces by legendary singer, songwriter Joni Mitchell with the GRU Women’s Choral Ensemble. O'Riley will conclude program with Grieg’s Piano Concerto featuring the GRU Orchestra.

Subscription tickets will be available soon and are very reasonably priced. You will be able to get Lyceum Series season tickets for less than the cost to attend just one event at many places locally. We are keeping prices down to make it easier for students and community members to attend.
